Designing new spaces in a mature 7 acre garden brings it’s challenges as well as lots of creative opportunities. How those spaces interact with each other provides the flow and sense of place and is the key to getting the design right. On this project formal geometry and planting frame the house and link the pool and entertainment room through a series of paths framing a formal lawn. The wider landscape is more relaxed with a parkland aesthetic containing a large pond and lime walk. Wilder areas with longer length grass and mown paths would increase biodiversity and reduce ongoing maintenance. A wet and muddy December 2020 to May 2022 and now the garden is taking shape and the design is being realised. A beautiful, formal garden and driveway framing the Grade II listed gentleman’s mansion. The water fountain provides the centre point for the circular drive, defined by formal lawns, clipped hedges and box pleached Carpinus. A large walled garden extending from the kitchen that provides a convenient place to dine and chill as well as an enclosed space for the family’s two large dogs to be let out. As such the priority was practicality, hence the resin gravelled surface, however the garden still needed to provide a pleasant place to sit and views from the kitchen all year round. The planting scheme incorporates topiary for structure and screening, evergreens, blossom, herbs and herbaceous to create year round colour and interest. First time back to this project we finished in the depths of winter. Have to say it’s looking fabulous! But more importantly my client has discovered a love of gardening and has looked after every new plant. There wasn’t a weed in sight and all the plants were well watered through this dry spring. They have been rewarded with a garden bursting into life in it’s first season. There have been parties, family games, revision and coffees and it’s only May. 🍏 A lovely little garden completed today. Small spaces are difficult to design as you want to make sure all the space is maximised. The paved seating area catches the evening sun and festoon lighting will create a cosy entertaining area. There’s also another seating spot outside the patio doors to enjoy a morning coffee in the sunshine. The water bowl doubles up as a fire pit which can be moved to the evening area. Staggered paving, gravel and boulders create flow and energy through the garden softened with a planting palette of grasses and perennials designed to spill over, and into, the gravel. The oak uprights break up the fence and the evergreen grasses between will create a billowing anchor when mature. I have been lucky to be involved in creative industries all my working life and there have been many inspiring teachers and mentors along the way. I am privileged and thrilled to be involved in a memorial for one such teacher, Sherrill Wexler who taught us Spanish dance and flamenco. On 7th April a bunch of Old Elms will be dancing a flamenco dance I last performed 35 years ago, to honour a very special lady who we loved and admired. Huge tragedies in the world and smaller tragedy closer to home. A beautiful narcissus bouquet aptly called ‘The Dylan’ sent in sympathy for the loss of our dog, friend and one of the boys for 16 special years.
Looking forward to starting the build on this little courtyard garden in a few weeks time. Small spaces on a tight budget need to work really hard, so flexible seating areas and features such as a water bowl that doubles up as a fire pit creates a focal point and water for wildlife and a cosy fire when required. Painting fencing black is a great trick to send the boundary into the background and highlight the planting.
